This is the first stage of an evolving website meant to be more of an archive than a marketing tool. After nearly 45 years of painting, my commitment to the process should be evident.
The site will feature numerous examples of work from mid 1980s through the current work “evanescence.” I will be adding notations, where relevant, of thoughts and impetus for specific series—“access keys” that often weren’t presented at the time of the work. The biggest reason for not offering these keys is the belief that the work must speak on its own in its own language. No short tracks. Verbal and written notions are always extra-pictorial and can offer insights and thoughts that sometimes amplify the experience.
I am indebted to many wonderful people along the way, dealers, collectors, writers and of course students who provided challenges and inspirations as I was privileged to watch them evolve. To all many thanks.
I would also like to thank the photographers that have helped document the work and the process: Gene Ogami, Addison Doty, Becky Walding and Margaret Cushing. Most of the earlier works—the Heartland Series and subsequent material—were shot by myself with the technical help of the local camera shop owner. Margaret gets another thanks for doing the website and keeping it simple and user friendly.
Also thanks to Michaela Kahn for her brilliance with words and the uncanny ability to see the immediate and the infinite within the work. She manages to verbalize the content-painting that language offers but is often difficult to find. Many thanks.
Last, and certainly not least, Becky Walding. NONE of this would be possible without her. Simply put, she would say “do the work.” THANKS BECK
