A poem by Marilyn Kemppainen

The disappearance of ice -
The sound of a titanic mea culpa
Enormous mass falls into the sea.
Silence.
The disappearance of me.

The "Refuge Series" laments global ice loss, along with continuing  loss of open space. Refuge is never unassailable. Often it is fugitive and fragile. I am using the recurring motif of a square or "box" as a portrait of our individual and collective fingerprint on the earth.
The box is the most common vernacular of both architecture and technology. Each is a form of claim and measurement, and often is abandoned or orphaned, left behind in what was open space.
The "Refuge Series" is a reflection of this process and are  meant to solicit thoughtful introspection.

The paintings are variations on a theme that go through sequences of change. The interaction of theme and context is under constant revision. And because the paintings are layered, sequences come and go, some reclaimed, some buried and some obliterted. They all are continuously modified until "resolution" is achieved.
